Spain faces the highest inflation in the last 29 years. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at a rate of 5.4% in the month of October, which represents its highest value since 1992. The sharp increase in the cost of electricity and fuel is the main reason, although there are also other products in the shopping basket that have skyrocketed. The data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveal that this growth in prices has already spread to the rest of the sectors with a chain effect. This phenomenon is clearly observed in the underlying inflation rate, which excludes energy products from its calculations, and which has also grown by 1.4% in the month of October.

Beyond the electricity bill, analysts have noticed the rise in other sectors such as food and non-alcoholic beverages , which have increased 1.3% in the last year. Clothing and footwear have soared 11.1% and transportation has risen 2% after the  AT&T Email List coronavirus economic crisis. What products have increased in price in the shopping cart due to inflation? Inflation has also reached some of the basic products that Spaniards consume on a daily basis. Although the evolution of prices is not as high as that of electricity or gasoline , there is an increase in costs in many supermarket items compared to 2020. The biggest increase has been in olive oil, which has shot up 26% in October compared to the price it had just a year ago.

This upward trend has been repeated for several months now as a consequence of the reduction in the harvest in Spain and the increase in demand in the international market. Soft drinks have also seen a strong rise, raising their price by 10.7% at the end of October. This increase coincides with the increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT) that Alberto Garzón's Ministry of Consumer Affairs agreed for all sugary drinks. The increase from 10% to 21% in the tax is being borne directly by customers. In the shopping basket, some growth that is above average also stands out, such as that of margarine, which has increased its cost by 7.7% in supermarkets. Sheep meat (7.2%), baby food (5.3%) and canned fruits (5.2%) are some of those that have increased the most in the last year. Inflation has also reached those items that play an essential role in household purchases, especially the most vulnerable.
