The mafias are beginning to take over the gold buying and selling business. The opening of stores of this type has doubled in Spain so far this year. 90% of these new businesses are controlled by clans of gypsy origin that operate in a suspicious manner.El Confidencial Digital has been able to learn about the operation of these stores, which are already being closely monitored by the Police. This is how they operate : The gypsy mafia organizations offer “values that are not real, prices that are not quoted” for the pieces, explains a prominent businessman in the sector located in the central district of Madrid. These clans buy gold at a slightly higher price than legal businesses, which in principle satisfies the client and seems to cause losses for the buyer. They also “manage to sell more, because they make it cheaper.” The 'business', in short, is in non-compliance with regulations .

This expert, with extensive experience in the matter, explains that the mafias "melt the piece as soon as they receive it, without waiting the 15 regulatory days or registering it with the Police." That way, the commissioners do not have time to check if it is a stolen item. They traffic, therefore, in molten gold , of which it is UK Mobile Number List impossible to verify its origin, while the rest of the stores must hand over the stolen pieces that are received, with the consequent loss of the investment. All businesses are required by law to submit a weekly report to the Police, in which the date of acquisition of each piece and the identity of who sold it appears. Two weeks later they receive confirmation to send it to the foundry, where it will wait another week. Some, as has been seen, do not follow this procedure. 'Buy gold' businesses are generally independent franchises, must be self-managed and do not belong to any type of union. For this reason, they can only go to 'Group 11' of the Police , which is exclusively in charge of this type of jewelry, gold and antique stores.

Merchants who do comply with the law claim to feel, in general, unprotected because this unit does not do more than it can do. They say that protection measures are aimed primarily at prevention, with searches and inspections of premises, but that they are not effective in the long term. “At most they close the business, but then they reopen it by registering a relative as the owner or they do it themselves under another name,” complains a worker from the Arganzuela-Carabanchel district of Madrid. He adds that “no one dares to report because you have to give your name, and with that you can later suffer retaliation .” Many of these buying and selling houses offer the possibility of pawning jewelry instead of selling it. The problem is that, when the client comes to recover the gold, he finds that it has already been melted and is unrecoverable . Aggressive advertising is another of the 'blows' that businessmen must endure.
