Alcoy: the industrial pioneer of the Valencian Community

The city of Alcoy was founded in the 13th century AD . Also known as the City of Bridges , it is one of the most important in Alicante. It is located between the natural parks of Font Roja, Els Plans and Sierra de Mariola. Since the 14th century AD, the town's artisans made wool products to trade in local markets. Manufacturing in which it prospered to the point of becoming a pioneer of the Spanish Industrial Revolution, especially in the textile area.

What to see in Alcoy?
The old, modern and industrial Alcoy has a diversity of places that are worth visiting, among them:

The old town of Alcoy
The old town corresponds to what the town was in its beginnings . It was surrounded by a wall that some stretches can be seen today. They contain the remains of the Sant Roc and Riquer portals, as well as the Naixa and Navalora towers. Alcoy is a worthy representative of medieval and modern architecture that mix in an interesting urban planning. It houses various sites and monuments that have remained over time to tell their story.

House of Culture
The cultural house of Alcoy is located in an old and majestic neoclassical style building , built in 1927. The Municipal Archive and the Public Library are also located there. This building was built to be the headquarters of the Bank of Spain, which opened during the industrial heyday. In 1982 the bank closed its offices and donated the property to the city council for cultural use. So the structure was restored and adapted for its established purpose.

City Hall
Also called Municipal House , it is an academic building, built between 1846 and 1963, on the land where the Convent of San Agustín was. It is located in the historic center of the city, in the Plaza de España, next to the Church of Santa María and the Multiple Hall designed by the architect S. Calatrava. There, authentic works by local artists who have expressed themselves through sculpture and painting are displayed there, for the enjoyment of locals and foreigners alike.

The Turkey House
It is a magnificent building built in 1909 on Nicolau Street in Alcoy. It combines the functional with the exquisite of the industrial heyday. It stands showing the beauty of modernist art on its façade and inside. In the first, you can see different textures and tones of the stones that form it. As well as a mosaic of colored glass, forged doorknobs, two doors whose lintel has a sculpted peacock, among other beautiful artistic details.

The bridges
Walking through Alcoy we understand why it is called the City of Bridges . It has Telegram Number Data than 25 bridges , due to the irregularity of the area and the growth of the population. Built in different periods and with interesting designs, these bridges are worth a visit. Among them, the María Cristina Bridge (1838), the first public work of the Villa, stands out for its architecture; the Sant Jordi Bridge (1931) and the Canalejas Viaduct (1907).



The headquarters of the Industrial Circle
It is a modernist building influenced by the Viennese style, it was built between 1909 and 1911 on San Nicolau Street. It is a work that stands out for its architectural design. Both inside and outside it exhibits artistic details such as geometric and floral ornaments, Hellenistic figures, the railings of the viewpoints... Highlights in its interior include the Rotunda Room, the Long Room, the Library and the Grotto (1896), a work with appearance of a cavern located in the basement of the building.

The Festival Museum
Located in an exceptional building in the medieval neighborhood, the Museum reviews in detail the Moors and Christians Festival in honor of Sant Jordi. These are celebrated in April. These festivals were declared of International Tourist Interest in 1980. When touring its facilities you can see the exhibition of elements and information about the activities of the three days of celebration. In which the events of 1276 are commemorated, related to the uprising of the Muslims in the area.

Archeological Museum
Declared a Monument of National Artistic Interest in 1962 . It is located in a Renaissance building built in the 16th century, in the medieval neighborhood. It was inaugurated in 1945 under the name of the Art Museum and Public Library. Later, in 1958 it was named the Camilo Visedo Molto Archaeological Museum, in honor of its creator. In its 192 square meters it exhibits archaeological pieces organized by theme and chronology. Belonging to the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman periods.

Dins Square
This is the spectacular Plaza Mayor of Alcoy . A product of 19th century neoclassical style architecture, its floor has a harmonious color design and its porticos in the shape of classicist style arches belonging to the Convent of San Agustín (14th century). It also has a Gothic style portico belonging to the homonymous church that existed next to the convent. The ten buildings that comprise it are integrated and accessed through its ground floor.

La Llotja de Sant Jordi
It is an incredible exhibition hall in Alcoy . Located in the heart of the city, under the floor of the Plaza de España. Made of concrete and with a spectacular design that greatly resembles the skeleton of a whale. It was built between 1992 and 1995 and inaugurated upon completion of its construction. In addition to the well-known exhibitions, various social and cultural activities are carried out there. Therefore, it is a meeting point for Alcoyan society.

Where to stay in Alcoy?
Alcoy, being a thriving industrial city in the Valencian Community , offers a large number of places to stay. There are ones for all tastes, with features that adapt to the needs of those who visit the city and fair prices. It is advisable to stay in the city center so that it is easier to get to the different places of interest. Some of those places are Sercotel Ciutat d'Alcoi, Savoy Hostal, Hotel Reconquista and Hotel Masia La Mota.

Gastronomy of Alcoy
The gastronomy of Alcoy is rich and varied with a seasoning typical of the place that brings pleasure to the palates of those who taste it. Among the typical dishes are pericana (preparation with fish), '0lleta' (stew with pork), 'borreta' (stew with fish), stuffed peppers, coca (sweet or salty) and Picaeta Alcoiana . In the latter, the tasty stuffed olive stands out for being an invention of the population. The typical drinks, coffee liqueur and Mentireta, also stand out.
