This natural stone doesn't belong to any particular family, nor does it have a defined composition, but that's why it's so appreciated by everyone. Its benefits in lithotherapy have been known since ancient times, and its fullerene molecules detoxify and soothe the body. What's more, its black color is timeless, modern, perfect for jewelry-making and, above all, unisex. History of Shungite The name Shungite comes from a village called Shunga, in the republic of Karelia in northwest Russia. According to Russian legend, the emperor Gemstone the Great was very interested in various medicines and built the first thermal baths on Shungite deposits. He is said to have recommended Shungite-based elixirs known as "Waters of Mars" to counter certain infections and illnesses. He then decided to spend his last years living close to a thermal spring to treat and relieve his ailments. Subsequent studies and research showed that the water in the Martsialnye Vody thermal spring contained fullerenes, which, after several analyses, were found to be beneficial to the body, thanks in particular to their antioxidant properties.

Origin of Shungite Shungite can be mined mainly in Russia. However, recent deposits have appeared in Kazakhstan and India with characteristics similar to Shungite, but not necessarily of the same rarity as that of the Karelian region. Shungite's hardness generally ranges between 3.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale. However, it should be borne in mind that hardness can vary according to composition and carbon content. Virtues and significance of Shungite in lithotherapy In lithotherapy Shungite is a stone of protection and comfort.
