Closing the gender gap in companies with Big Data

Closing the gender gap is one of the objectives that several companies have proposed. To achieve this, it is important that women begin to be part of the boards of directors, since according to data presented by the International Labor Organization (ILO), to date only 7% of these positions are held by women.

Currently women earn a fifth less than men, and in Mexico, the gap is greater: 34%.

Faced with this panorama and with the aim of Chile Mobile Number List changing the statistics, Mia Pedromo and Andrea de la Piedra joined together in 2013 to create a company that helps other companies close the gender gap.

They met at Georgetown University, United States, and created a methodology to diagnose and measure the gender gap within companies.

This is how Aequales was born, a consulting company that helps organizations identify areas of opportunity.

At first, data was collected in Excel sheets and very personalized consulting was provided, but the gender gap is a systemic problem. That is why technological tools were used to give more scalability to the project.

Data from the consulting firm McKinsey states that Latin America's GDP could increase 34% by 2025 if gender gaps in the labor market were closed.

The first application that used technology was the PAR Ranking, in favor of equity. This was done through a measurement questionnaire, which offers a free diagnosis with a report of results.

In this way, the measurement is started to compare at the industry, country and region level in order to make visible the companies that have made greater progress in this regard.

Forbes reports that data has been collected from 800 companies in Latin America so far. Colombia, Peru and Mexico are the countries with the greatest participation, although there is also data from organizations in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Panama, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.

With this ranking you can measure the management of objectives, the organizational structure, culture and management of companies. The ten best organizations that are among the first places receive public recognition from Aequales.


Recently the winners were Kellog's, ATT, DuPont and Accenture.

« We have detected a greater participation of transnational companies because they have principles acquired in developed countries. In the case of national companies in the region, we have seen that interest is generally promoted by a young leader ,” details Rodas.

The incorporation of women into the labor market is a crucial issue in economic matters, because in the region there is still a lag in terms of equity and access to the labor market, according to the president of the bank, Luis Alberto Moreno.

We are ready to support large projects in Mexico, especially those that contribute to closing gender gaps.


The numbers allow us to see where actions must be strengthened to incorporate women.

"Many companies assume principles of gender equality in their policies and in their philosophical vision, but, when it comes to actions, they realize that more work is needed on it."

About Aequales
Aequales has two products that incorporate data to identify areas where the gender gap is most marked: the first is the PAR Platform.

Completing the questionnaire and evaluating each company can be free, however, the comparison at the industry, country and region level does have a cost.
